Day 8-Santa Monica, CA

Day 8: Santa Monica

Hey it’s the Sleepys back again!
This morning we woke up in Santa Monica, California at 6:00 a.m after an overnight drive. Some people slept well while others did not sleep at all. Shout out to all of the co-pilots on the bus and van: Aedan, Aaron, Gracie, Gilbert, Kara, Meredith H., and Peyton. They kept our drivers awake and all of us safe. Shout out to our amazing drivers too! Once we arrived, we got ready and changed into our bathing suits. We were surprised with the amount of fog and clouds that were out, as many of us pictured California as always sunny. While the cooks prepared breakfast a group of brave souls went and jumped in the water right away! It was very cold…but we couldn’t wait to feel the Pacific Ocean!  We had a delicious breakfast of donuts, bananas, and yogurt parfaits. After breakfast, people split into smaller groups to explore Santa Monica. Many people went to the farmer’s market and bought fresh strawberries, grapes, and plums. Audrey even bought some flowers for Randy! Others visited the pier and different shops around Santa Monica where they bought t-shirts and souvenirs. Many people rode the ferris wheel and the roller coaster on the pier. Though the water was very cold, several people stayed on the beach to swim and others played volleyball and whiffle ball. The games of volleyball included team Bucee’s and Team Flamingo. They each won one time. The whiffle game also got a little intense. Stuart forgot that it wasn’t football and you couldn’t tackle people when playing. Even Randy and the other counselors played!  Everyone met for lunch around 12:00, and we ate Hawaiian roll sandwiches, watermelon, and chips. Each group then got together to practice and then perform their TWB chants from yesterday. Unfortunately, us Sleepys did not win, and instead the Bashfuls won with their parody of “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Then, we had a little bit more free time in Santa Monica. Some people played football on the beach, took naps, or walked around some more. Kat and Will were able to catch some waves in the ocean. We left Santa Monica around 3:00 and drove through LA traffic to our campsite in Anaheim, California while the cooks went to Walmart to buy dinner. Most people slept on the bus, due to lack of sleep from the overnight drive. Once we arrived, we began unpacking and setting up for the night. The cooks made a delicious dinner of walking tacos with beans, queso, chips, watermelon, cookies, and pink lemonade. While dinner was being prepared and others were showering, a cartwheel competition broke out into a dance party. Dances included Cotton-Eyed Joe, Wobble, and Church Clap. We finished our night with a family meeting where we caught up on research from previous days and learned about our day tomorrow with Mickey!!! Time to get 8 hours of sleep so we can go to Disneyland tomorrow.
